I just spent a number of hours setting up the network in my new unit. The phone line is in the kitchen, and due to wife reasons, running a cat 5 through the middle of the unit, over to the office wasn’t an option. Anyway, I used a new DGN2000 Adsl, Wireless router in the kitchen and then wanted to use the wifi to bridge to my old WRT54G in my office, so the wired network in the office could access the net.
The configuration required for the DGN2000 was very simple, just set it up as you normally would. I manually specified which channel I wanted for the wifi and setup WPA2 with a shared key.
Then on the wrt54g, I reset the unit to its default which I read can help performance (option in the tomato firmware: erase all NVRAM). I then grabbed the latest Gargoyle firmware (I tried the svesoft and tomato firmwares without any luck) and loaded it up. When you login to Gargoyle, just follow the prompts, enter the SSID of the netgear, select the correct channel and enter the security details. I also recommend leaving/putting the wrt554g router on a seperate subnet to reduce broadcast traffic and increase speed through the wifi. That worked for me.
